The crime branch here busted a sex racket on Saturday night, arresting a 22-year-old actress from the Tamil film industry on charges of prostitution. The actress was nabbed at a five-star hotel in the city.

The police also arrested the actress's 32-year-old stepbrother, who used to accompany her to different cities. Shockingly, the actress's father, who runs a photo studio at Versova in Mumbai, ran the racket and would identify clients for his daughter, the police said. He is yet to be arrested.

Speaking to TOI, senior police inspector Bhanupratap Barge said the actress recently played the lead role in three Tamil movies, none of which have been released yet. As a child, she had acted in several Tamil films. She has also modelled for the garment and diamond industries in Chennai, he said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team from the social security cell of the crime branch laid a trap at a five-star hotel at Vimannagar and arrested the actress and her stepbrother. "Police constable Ashok Takalkar received a tip-off about the actress's father running a sex racket in the city. We also got information that some models and actresses from the film industry were involved in the racket. We got someone to pose as a client and contacted the actress's father. The father said he would get a Tamil model and actress, who would charge Rs 3 lakh for two hours," Barge said.

The father also asked the man posing as a client to book two rooms, one for the actress and another for her stepbrother, at the Vimannagar hotel, Barge said. "On Saturday night, the actress came to the hotel with her stepbrother. We arrested them and charged them under relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act," Barge said.

During interrogation, the actress said they had flown to Mumbai from Chennai on Saturday and came to Pune in a private taxi. "The woman also revealed that her father acted as her agent. She had come to Pune twice earlier for prostitution," Barge said.

"The actress told us that she was involved in prostitution as she was short on money. We have transferred the case to the Yerawada police station for further investigations," Barge said.

Tamil actress Caroline Mariya Asan was arrested in pune on prostitution case from a five-star hotel in Viman Nagar here last evening, police said today.

"We laid a trap and sent a decoy customer. Caroline is quite popular in Chennai. She has played heroine in movies- `Rain`, `Wadachalam` and others," Senior Inspector (Crime Branch) Bhanupratap Barge said.

According to him, the actess had done modelling assignments for diamond and textile companies in Chennai and Bengaluru.

A case has been registered against her at Viman Nagar police chowkie and her manager and film studio owner M Rajkumar (32) has also been arrested, Barge added.

Her step-brother who acted as agent also arrested, search on for father.

In yet another high-profile prostitution racket, the Social Security Cell of Pune police crime branch on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old south Indian model and her step-brother who acted as her agent.

A team led by senior inspector Bhanupratap Barge was working on a tip off by constable Ashok Takalkar’s informants that a 32-year-old agent, Rajkumar Mariathasan, has been bringing models and aspiring actresses to various hotels in Pune and Mumbai for prostitution. On Saturday night, cops laid a trap through a decoy customer. “Around 10 pm on Saturday, we arrested a 22-year-old woman, Caroline Mariathasan along with Rajkumar, who is her step-brother, from a five-star hotel in Pune,” Barge said.

Investigations revealed that Caroline is a graduate and had been modelling for jewellery and garments in south India. “Caroline has told us that her father, Ranjit, runs a photo studio in Mumbai. We have made her father an accused in the case and have launched a search for him,” Barge said.

“Caroline told us that she was doing this as she needed money. But things will be clear in course of the investigation,” he added. According to the police, Caroline has acted in three Tamil movies, which are yet to be released.

As of now, the police have not found any other woman involved in the case. “No other name has come up. Rajkumar told us that most of the time, his father arranged customers while he did it sometimes. Caroline has come to Pune twice earlier. She has been charging as much as Rs 3 lakh for two hours. Her customers were also made to pay for air travel and two suites in the hotels they stayed — one for her and the customer and one for the agent. On Saturday, she and Rajkumar flew to Mumbai from Chennai and then took a private taxi to Pune.”

Both Caroline and Rajkumar, who have been booked under various sections of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, were produced before a magistrate’s court on Sunday and remanded in police custody till Monday. The case has now been transferred to Yerawada police station.

The investigation was conducted under guidance of additional commissioner of police (crime) Anant Shinde and DCP (crime) Rajesh Bansode. The investigating team comprised API Vimal Bidve, PSI Ashvini Jagtap and constables Datta Nikam, Mohan Thorat, Kashinath Ubhe, Shashikant Shinde, Bapu Jambhale, Krushna Machare and Vaishali Wagh.
